The Region. In my opinion the Aegean Sea is a beautiful sailing area. Especially the Turkish westcoast and the Eastern Greek islands are not so crowded with tourists. In comparison with the southcoast the winds are more difficult though, because when you are heading north, you are getting them straight on the nose very often. Provisions and landfalls (with cosy restaurants) are also more scarce especially when in nice lonesome bays. Often within hours a stiff wind with six to seven beaufort is blowing, and winds of eight beaufort accompanied by beautiful sunshine are not rare in this region! During nighttime, the fallwinds at otherwise safe anchoring can be very unexpected both in force and direction. By the way, if you have problems with your sails, I can recommend a very good sailmaker in this region, to solve them: www.yelkenbicer.com (Mehmet Ali) in Kisikköy near IZMIR.
